Fairmount Memorial

S. Main Street
Fairmount, IL  61841

The Memorial, which was completed and dedicated in 1997, stands beside the fire station downtown Fairmount.

It includes a section for each:

  • World War I
  • World War II
  • Korea
  • Vietnam
  • Gulf

In the center of the memorial grounds, a column was placed, with tribute to the U.S. Army Lieutenant, Carols C. Ogden who was presented the Medal of Honor for ‘heroic leadership and indomitable courage on June 28, 1944, in France, when he, after being injured himself, silenced an 88 mm gun and two machine guns in an effort to clear the way for his company to continue the advance and reach its objectives.’

The bricks used to build the memorial are from the main street in Fairmount that had been paved with bricks for many decades.
